GOOD NEWS: The government has directed all millers to sell maize flour(UNGA) at Sh47

The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has directed all millers to sell maize flour at Sh47 for a 1kg bag and Sh90 for a 2kg packet from Wednesday. The new prices were announced after the government opted to import maize from Mexico to help solve out the escalating prices of maize flour in the country.

Under the new scheme, the Ministry will undertake a promotion campaign to create public awareness of the subsidy program whereas millers will process and brand flour bearing the Government of Kenya (GoK) label. “Millers will process, package and distribute the maize flour from this subsidy program in packets clearly and boldly marked ‘GoK Food Subsidy’ in line with the approved subsidy mark,” a statement from the Government read in part. The shortage of maize had raised the cost of flour to an all-time high of Sh189 per 2kg packet since limited stocks had pushed the cost of a 90kg bag to Sh4,500. About 30,000 tonnes of maize have so far been imported from Mexico to address the shortage, with an additional consignment expected in a fortnight. Here is the notice:
